Embedded Systems Competition (ESC) 2021

The Brazilian Embedded Systems Competition (ESC) is a competition open to undergraduate and graduate students to develop and present an innovative solution of embedded technology for market applications. The competition provides the opportunity for students to present creative solutions aiming to solve many different problems shared by their community and contribute to the evolution of this segment of embedded computing in Brazil. The focus is the development of Embedded Systems for IoT in different subareas of application.

This year the competition adopts a new format with three possible platform types:
1- Open Platform – embedded Linux or other full O.S. (open platform means that every team is free to choose the hardware/software platform that best fits its proposed project among those platforms that fit this category. Examples would be BeagleBone and Raspberry Pi).
2- Open Platform – Microcontroller and (optionally) an RTOS (open platform means that every team is free to choose the hardware/software platform that best fits its proposed project among those platforms that fit this category. An example would be Cortex-M with FreeRTOS).
3- Renesas Track – in this case, the 5 groups selected in the first phase will receive a Renesas Synergy™ S7G2 Starter Kit for their development. An Eclipse based IDE (e2studio) and RTOS are available at no cost for development.

The competition is organized in two phases (see calendar below):
• First Phase: the teams should proceed with a project proposal and possibly early development of their projects in order to perform the Project Submission. The Project Submission Form template is linked below and should contain as much as possible technical information about the Project, as well as information regarding the current development status.
• Second Phase: among the submitted Proposals, some will be selected/qualified for the second Phase (up to 10 in embedded Linux, up to 5 in Microcontroller + RTOS, up to 5 in the Renesas Track). Winners of ESC 202 competition get a “free ticket” to the second phase in any of the three platform types they choose (see Competition Regulation below). The participants of the second phase will present their project at ESC 2021 in Florianopolis during the SBESC.

Macnica Inc. is headquartered in Japan and is one of the largest semiconductor distributors in the world. With the intention of expanding the business, the Japanese distributor focused its operations in South America, especially in the Brazilian market, and in 2012, acquired the DHW. Established in Florianópolis since its birth, DHW, founded by the Electrical Engineer, Fábio Petrassem de Sousa, who started his company with a focus on Design House, had its business branch expanded and even more present and strengthened throughout Brazil. Today, we have offices in São Paulo and Joinville (Perini City Lab).
We are semiconductor distributors and IoT and AI (Artificial Intelligence) solutions developers, where we are already a world reference in areas such as Cybersecurity, Autonomous Vehicles, Robotics, AI, IIoT, Commercial and Banking Automation. We have a product and solution development team ranging from customized hardware (design of electronic boards and circuits) to the development of AI algorithms for inference in the cloud or on the edge.
Macnica DHW is the Official Intel Training Center in South America, and we are present in the academic world through the management of the University Program. We are also the Intel Center of Excellence in Brazil for AI and Hardware Acceleration Platforms (based on FPGA).
